Internet Time Blog: Comment on Manchester!!!
My two bits on ways to win with e-learning
1.Personalised dynamic content
Content that evolves with the user and retains its freshness.
2.Products built around the web and make web a part of their existence
Like Ebay, Like Amazon where web is a part of the offering and the part which dramatically differentiates these offerings from their stand alone counterparts, eLearning has to evolve its own versions of similar products
3.Harnessing the network power
Products should leverage on the most important strength the web provides... putting people in touch.
... and the ways to lose your shirt
1. Treating the Net as a cheap delivery medium
2. Following the publish once earn forever model
3. Assuming any content put on the web gets magically transformed to e-Learning
4. Not competing on the strengths of the mediumPosted by Ramki at December 30, 2002 04:20 PM
GuerrillaKM is a network of people interested in communities of practice.
整天弹出来,又不像Popup窗口可以用MyIE/Mozilla/Phoenix过滤掉
Viktor Frankl - Man's Search for Meaning
"Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible."
Man's Search for Meaning, p.172
Social Software adapts to its environment, instead of requiring its environment to adapt to software.
Valdis Krebs offers a Social Network Analyst's view of Social Software... An organization's data is found in its computer systems, but a company's intelligence is found in its biological and social systems. Computer networks must support the people networks in today's fluid and adaptive organizations -- not the other way around. [from Jon Udell's piece on Seeing and Tuning Social Networks]
I won a copy of "Principle Centered Leadership" by Stephen R. Covey. The little I read suggested that the author was more than he appeared: your average management consultant seems to display very little by way of faith, yet Covey seemed to have some kind of faith underpinning his argument. A little research provided me answers. First was an article A Closer Look At Stephen Covey And His 7 Habits which lead me to read The Shifting Paradigms of Stephen Covey. As a committed member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Covey obviously would be arguing from a position of faith if that faith had made any impact on his life.
While the underpinnings of Covey's thought process are somewhat different to my own I still found it interesting to read and think about his 7 habits, and look at the converse of each. Covey points out in the introduction to "Principle Centered Leadership" that the inverse of each of the 7 habits of effective people work out as being habits of ineffective people:
Ineffective
- Be reactive: doubt yourself and blame others
- Work without any clear end in mind
- Do the urgent thing first
- Think win/lose
- Seek first to be understood
- If you can't win, compromise
- Fear change and put off improvement
Effective
- Be Proactive
- Begin with the End in Mind
- Put First Things First
- Think Win/Win
- Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
- Synergize
- Sharpen the Saw

In the recent KM review Catherine Connelly shares results of the study focused on finding factor that are significant predictors of knowledge sharing among employees [more here].
Among other results (not in the article) the following factors were found important:
perceived management commitment to knowledge sharing
positive social interaction climate (e.g. feeling easy approaching others with questions)
But this one I like more - technology doesn't play a significant role:
...the findings of this study suggest that an organizations' information technology did not significantly affect the amount of knowledge exchange among employees. That is, employees who didn't have access to intranets, repositories or even e-mail were just as likely to share knowledge as their counterparts who had access to a wide variety of information technology (p.7).
She conclude we promoting smaller KM budgets:
The irony of promoting knowledge sharing on a smaller budget is that it may actually be more effective than a more expensive campain.
I'm not 100% sure that technology is not important for knowledge sharing, but this study is something to refer to while discussing that technology shouldn't drive it.
Tech titans launch Wi-Fi company - Tech News - CNET.com
Intel Capital, along with Big Blue, AT&T and investors Apax Partners and 3i, announced the creation of Cometa Networks--formerly known as Project Rainbow--a new company focused on deploying hot spots throughout the United States. Hot spots are public areas where people can access the Internet using products based on 802.11b, or Wi-Fi, a wireless networking standard with a range of about 300 feet from a network's access points, or radio transmitters.
Javascript for Blogger Archives
Blogger does a great many things very well, but creating attractive archive links is not one of its strongest suits. These are just some javascripts to improve on the default 01/01/1980 - 01/07/1980 style of link names, inspired by Jake's post in the Blogger Developer's Discussion forum.

Web Entrepreneur Eyes Small Launcher Market
"I look for three things in a business," Musk said in an interview. "First of all, it needs to be commercially viable. Secondly it has to be interesting and fun. And third, if it succeeds, it has to have some beneficial effect on the world."
